Getting to Akumal & Driving Tips

Fly into Cancun International Airport.

Most people will rent a car, and drive the one hour south to our home.  It is a safe and easy drive on a new modern highway.  If you choose, there are public transportation options available, including busses, vans, and taxis.

Driving Note:  From Cancun to Playa Del Carmen, (about 1/2 way to Akumal) the road is a modern 4-lane divided highway.  From Playa Del Carmen to Aventuras Akumal, the road becomes a modern wide 2+ lane highway with wide shoulders on both sides.

The general rule of the road is to move to the shoulder to allow passing cars to go by.

When you see the car in front of you turn on the left turn signal, it means either: 

• They are turning left, or
• You are safe to pass.

When  you use your left turn signal, you are also sending either of these two messages.  This can be quite dangerous if in fact you are turning, and the vehicle behind you thinks it is safe to pass.

We suggest that when you prepare to make a left turn, you proceed as follows:

• Use your 4-way flashers, and pull off to the right.  Wait for traffic to clear, and complete your turn.
